In vertebrate anatomy, the thyroid gland or simply, the thyroid, is one of the largest endocrine glands in the body. The thyroid gland is found in the neck, inferior to (below) the thyroid cartilage (also known as the Adam's Apple) and at approximately the same level as the cricoid cartilage. The thyroid controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body should be to other hormones. In many areas of the world, millions of people are being affected by a thyroid problem called Hypothyroidism. This occurs when the thyroid gland is not secreting sufficient supply of thyroid hormone. There are several symptoms that someone has a thyroid issue. Symptoms include pale and dry skin, fatigue, muscle pain, unexplainable weight gain, depression, constipation and weakness. When hypothyroidism gets worse, it can lead to other complications such as body swelling, hoarseness, speech difficulty and decreased sense of taste.
