A 6.3-magnitude earthquake ripped across Christchurch, New Zealand, onto Tuesday afternoon, inflicting multiple fatalities as it toppled halls onto buses, buckled streets and wrecked cathedrals, administration said. The quake struck shortly before 1 p.m Tuesday (7 p.m. Monday ET). It was followed by a series of aftershocks including a 5.6-magnitude aftershock about 15 minutes later. The United States Geological Survey recorded a second 5.5-magnitude aftershock shortly before 3 p.m. local time. Radio New Zealand also noted some of the damage from the quake in Christchurch: a church collapsed, a bridge is impassible, the airport has been shut down and the mayor is urging people not to drive due to road damage.
