The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake, with an epicentre near the village of Léogâne, roughly 25 km (16 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. The earthquake appeared at 16:53 localized time (21:53 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010. The earthquake that hit Japan ton 11th March 2011 was much, much stronger than the January 12 2010 earthquake that flattened much of Haiti. 8.8 (Japan) is several orders of magnitude stronger than 7.2 (Haiti). The Japan earthquake will likely result in a death toll in the several hundreds or thousands. The Haiti earthquake killed in the hundreds of thousands.
